Those wishing to respond to hurricanes in the Gulf Coast by sending relief items, providing housing or volunteering can use this resource list for directing their offerings.  Please note that volunteers are also needed in the Florida recovery effort. America's Second Harvest is organizing the delivery nationwide to deliver food goods to the impacted areas. The national number is 800-771-2303.  Their website is http://www.secondharvest.org/default2.asp.

In addition to the above agencies, the following Florida-Bahamas Synod Churches are collecting items to fill a truck to send to the Gulf Coast.  Be sure to contact the church before taking items to these locations to make sure that they have not already sent their truck.

EARLY-RESPONSE VOLUNTEERS

  • Skilled/certified search and rescue volunteers. Visit the ELCA contact page and let them know that you are willing to volunteer.  Be sure to mention "search and rescue volunteer" in the "Describe volunteer assistance being offered" box.  Or, call the volunteer hotline at 773-380-2298.

  • Self-sufficient debris removal crews (able to provide their own food, water, sleeping arrangements) may contact LDR Volunteer Coordinators Hal Shope (hshope@allthingsnewministry.org, 678-580-3371, or Bob Tribble (trib713@juno.com, 404-313-7878), or access the ELCA contact page and leave a detailed message (put "self-sufficient debris removal crew" in the subject line), or call Lutheran Disaster Response Volunteer Hotline at 773-380-2298.

  • Health and medical professionals should contact the Department of Health and Human Services at 866/528-6334, volunteer.hhs.gov or www.hhs.gov

  • Individuals seeking employment with FEMA should call 800/879-6076, to receive instruction for faxing an application or resume to 540-542-2484.

  • Contractors seeking opportunities with FEMA should visit www.swern.gov

 

TENT CITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS BEING SET UP

Along with coordinating emergency response to victims in of Hurricane Katrina, Bob Tribble, ELCA Southeastern Synod Lutheran Disaster Response Coordinator is working with other relief agencies in the affected areas to set up “tent cities” to house volunteer groups near our congregations in South Mississippi.  These tent cities should be ready for occupation at the first of October.  If you or your group has volunteered to be part of the Katrina clean up effort, thank you for your patience while the facilities for volunteers are completed. 

 

 

ASSISTING WITH HOUSING

 

LCMS World Relief is coordinating housing relief efforts for displaced people.  To offer housing or to seek out possible housing options please contact LCMS World Relief at 1-800-248-1930.

 

A Limited Number of RV's for housing relief workers may be needed in the near future.  Please consider how you might help in this area.  Send information to katrinavolunteers@southernlcms.org.
